American ‘neighbours’ to help celebrate the 400th anniversary
In 2007 Ipswich will join with its American ‘neighbours’ to help celebrate the 400th anniversary of the founding of their first English-speaking colony.
In 1607 Bartholomew Gosnold, of Otley Hall near Ipswich, set sail from the East of England for the ‘New World’. On arrival he was instrumental in helping to establish what is thought to be the first permanent English-speaking colony in America, at Jamestown in Virginia.
Americans of all ages are eagerly anticipating this important anniversary, and representatives from Ipswich are working as part of a group organised by the Suffolk Tourism Partnership, to try and best promote this important historic link.
Recently two Ipswich ambassadors, Cllr Richard Atkins, Ipswich Borough Council portfolio holder for economic development, and David Stainer, Ipswich Tourist Information Centre manager, were honoured with invitations to participate in a whistle-stop tour of Jamestown and the surrounding area, culminating with the official opening of the new Jamestown Legacy Hall.
“The enthusiasm that the people of Jamestown have for Ipswich, and for our involvement in their celebrations, is truly infectious” explained Cllr Richard Atkins. “We have always understood that this historic connection is great news for Ipswich and Jamestown in terms of tourism, but it is now becoming clear that the benefits could be much wider reaching.”
This week, Bruce Goodson, chairman of the James City County Board of Supervisors and strong supporter of the Jamestown 2007 celebrations, is making the return visit to England to participate in the official commemoration of the date the ships set sail for the New World, in December 1606. During this visit he will also spend time in Ipswich, visiting the town and meeting with representatives from the Ipswich community.
The two communities are already exploring ways in which they can build upon their special connection. It is hoped that the programme of activity planned for next year will kick off with an official agreement between the two towns, opening the way for the growth of business, educational and cultural links, as well as encouraging increased tourism activity in both areas.
